Knowledge of English

You may need to prove your English language proficiency when applying.

You do not need to prove your English language proficiency if you are applying for a visa under one of the following headings:

  • Child
  • Adults coming to the UK to receive care from a relative.

You can prove your English language skills by presenting a university degree, or taking an exam.

University degrees

You can prove your English language skills if you meet the following conditions:

  • You have a university degree that has been taught or researched in English.
  • Your degree is recognized by the UK NARIC as equivalent to a bachelor’s degree or higher in the UK.

You must send the UK NARIC Certificate of Confirmation when applying for a visa.

Take one of the certified English language tests

You can prove your English language proficiency by reading, writing, speaking, and listening by taking one of the CEFR-certified test-taking tests.

If you intend to obtain permanent residence in the UK within 5 years

If you first took the CERF A1 test when applying for a visa, you must take the CERF A2 test when you apply for residency after 2.5 years.

If you did not have to take the CERF A1 test the first time you applied for a visa, but now need to pass the test, you must take the test after 2.5 years of residence.
